Apple is set to launch a next-generation CarPlay interface this year, marking a significant evolution of its in-car technology. Since its introduction, CarPlay has become a staple feature in many new vehicles, appealing to consumers who prioritize seamless smartphone integration in their driving experience. The new interface was first announced at WWDC in June 2022, and it promises to deliver a more integrated and customizable experience. The redesign of CarPlay is extensive, moving beyond the previous interface that had seen minimal changes since its rebranding from "iOS in the Car." The upcoming version will feature a split-view interface that allows users to view multiple apps simultaneously, along with a Dock for quick access to frequently used applications. One of the standout features of the new CarPlay is its ability to take over the entire infotainment system of a vehicle, including displays behind the steering wheel, creating a unified user experience. Apple emphasizes that this next-generation CarPlay will deeply integrate with a car's hardware, allowing it to access a broader range of vehicle features. This includes real-time data such as climate control, fuel levels, and instrument cluster information. Users will be able to control various functions directly through CarPlay, streamlining the interaction with their vehicle's systems. Customization is a key aspect of the new design, enabling users to personalize their driving experience. This includes selecting different gauge cluster designs, adjusting layouts, and choosing custom fonts and colors for the interface. CarPlay widgets will also provide quick access to information from various apps, enhancing usability. The first automakers to adopt this next-generation CarPlay include Porsche and Aston Martin, with both companies planning to launch vehicles equipped with the new system in 2024. Other manufacturers that have signed on to support the updated interface include Land Rover, Lincoln, Audi, Volvo, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Jaguar, Acura, Polestar, Infiniti, and Renault. However, Mercedes-Benz has opted out of adopting the new CarPlay, as confirmed by its CEO. As the rollout of this new CarPlay interface is dependent on individual automakers, details regarding specific implementation timelines remain sparse. Apple has indicated that it will provide further information ahead of the official launch, and while the design showcased at WWDC was a preview, adjustments may occur before the final release.
